How it's done! A Handyman's Guide to Installing a Lamp

Have you got a new lamp model for your living room and you don't know how to install it? If you are feeling a bit unsure about how to go about it and which tools to use, then keep reading to learn the step-by-step process of installing a lamp in your home.

Tools Needed

  • Drill
  • Screws, wall plugs and terminal blocks
  • Pliers
  • Screwdriver
  • Terminal block
  • Light bulb – TIP! Invest in low energy light bulbs if you want to save money at the end of the month on your electricity bill and be more sustainable (this type of light bulb pollutes less than traditional ones)

Points to Consider

Typically, lamps come with two or three wires that need to be connected, usually one is the positive and the other is the negative. Sometimes, they carry a third yellow or green wire, which is a grounding wire. Wires types:

  1. Brown or black: positive or phase.
  2. Blue: negative or neutral.
  3. Yellow or green: ground wire for protection. Some light fixtures have a terminal to connect it, in other cases, it is not necessary to connect it to anything, just leave it loose and hidden and cover the end with insulation tape.

Steps to Follow

Step 1: Turn Off the Power

Cut the electrical power from the central circuit board, only switch off the circuit breaker for the area where you are going to install the lamp. We recommend using gloves for handling the electricity, for enhanced safety measures.

Step 2: Determine the Lamp Height

Here is where you decide the height of your lamp. You should experiment with different heights using the actual lamp you're installing. Once you've determined the ideal distance, use the pliers to cut the excess wire.
