Since the middle of the 20th century, the number of urban gardens has grown considerably in Europe, due to the end of Second World War . Since then, this type of domestic agriculture begins to take root everytime more in Europe, reaching Spain at the end of this century.
In Spain this type of organic and ecological constructions has grown slowly and only in the big cities; Madrid, Barcelona and Seville. It does grow significantly until 2007, with the repercusions of the well known spanish crisis. From that moment on, urban gardens began to grow and establish themselves supported and promoted by environmental movements, associations and social movements.
Currently in Spain there are more than 20,000 urban gardens. This type of sustainable agriculture is now a days, part of the spanish landscape, being able to see community gardens on the large cities roofs, as well as in the vast majority of schools or centers for people with dependency, where this agrupations have created a space reserved for the creation and care of an urban garden.
We will like to explain the differences between the types of urban gardens, depending on their location and purpose, since they can be a family garden, a leisure garden or a social one. Within the different categories of urban garden, we can find also self-consumption, ecological or sustainable urban gardens.
